Abstract

Background and Aims: Thai local food culture and the soft power of local restaurant businesses are cultural assets that have long attracted domestic and international tourists. Chiang Mai Province, a major tourism destination, offers diverse local cuisine with distinctive identities that contribute to cultural and gastronomy tourism. This research aimed to 1) examine the predictive influence of the cultural capital of local restaurants on the travel decisions of Thai tourists in Chiang Mai; 2) examine the predictive influence of the soft power of local restaurants on the travel decisions of Thai tourists in Chiang Mai; and 3) compare the relative predictive weight of cultural capital and soft power on the travel decisions of Thai tourists in Chiang Mai.

Methodology: This quantitative, cross-sectional research used a questionnaire as the research instrument. Because Thai tourists visiting Chiang Mai do not constitute a population with a complete sampling frame, the sample size of 400 was determined from Krejcie and Morgan's table under the assumption of a large, indeterminate population, and respondents were recruited through convenience sampling at major tourism and dining locations in Chiang Mai between March and May 2026, restricted to Thai tourists aged 18 years or older who had dined at a local restaurant during their visit. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, standard deviation) and simple regression analysis.

Results: Cultural capital (food identity, atmosphere and storytelling, and cultural experience) and soft power (cultural charm, image building, and values) each showed a statistically significant positive predictive relationship with the travel decisions of Thai tourists in Chiang Mai (p < .05). The standardized coefficient for cultural capital (β = .512) was higher than that for soft power (β = .438); because the two coefficients came from separate simple-regression models rather than a single combined model, this comparison is descriptive and does not constitute a formal statistical test of difference.

Conclusion: Local restaurant businesses in Chiang Mai can draw on their cultural capital and soft power to strengthen tourist attraction and long-term competitiveness. The findings carry policy implications broadly consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 8, SDG 10, SDG 11, and SDG 12 although the study did not directly measure employment, inequality, sustainability, or consumption indicators, so this alignment should be read as an implication rather than a direct empirical finding.
