Abstract

Background and Aims: Climate change and urban air pollution linked to fossil-fuel transport have pushed many countries, Thailand included, to promote electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative with the potential to reduce use-phase emissions. Yet consumer uptake in Thailand remains uneven, shaped by how people perceive both the technology itself and their own environmental responsibilities. This study therefore examined (1) the influence of technology adoption on EV purchasing decisions and (2) the influence of environmental responsibility on EV purchasing decisions among working-age car users in Nonthaburi Province.

Methodology: A quantitative survey was conducted with 385 working-age car users in Nonthaburi Province, using non-probability sampling (quota by gender and age combined with convenience sampling). The sample size was derived from Cochran’s formula for an unknown population at a 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error; this benchmark is reported to document how the sample size was set and should not be read as a guarantee of probability-based generalizability, given the non-probability sampling method actually used. The questionnaire, built on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and environmental-responsibility literature, covered demographics, technology-adoption perceptions, environmental responsibility, and purchasing decisions, and was checked for content validity (by three experts) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha .82–.91) before use. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and simultaneous (enter-method) multiple regression at the .05 significance level.

Results: Both technology adoption (β = 0.412, p < .001) and environmental responsibility (β = 0.358, p < .001) significantly predicted EV purchasing decisions, jointly explaining 45.6% of the variance (R² = 0.456, Adjusted R² = 0.451). Within technology adoption, perceived usefulness carried the strongest weight, followed by behavioral intention, attitude toward use, and perceived ease of use. Within environmental responsibility, environmental awareness contributed more than attitude toward eco-friendly products. The overall level of purchase decision remained only moderate despite generally favorable perceptions, indicating that other unmeasured factors such as price and charging-infrastructure availability may also warrant investigation.

Conclusion: Technology adoption and environmental responsibility act as complementary predictors of EV purchase decisions, though together they leave more than half of the variance unexplained. Given the cross-sectional, non-probability design, these findings should be read as predictive associations rather than causal proof, and generalization beyond the sample should be made with caution.
