Factors Affecting the Adoption of the Circular Logistics Concept in Thai Manufacturing Businesses

Background and Aims: The linear production model of take-make-dispose has created significant environmental and resource challenges globally. Circular Logistics (CL) has emerged as a critical mechanism for enabling the Circular Economy (CE) within manufacturing firms. However, adoption remains limited in the Thai manufacturing sector, and empirical studies that examine the determinants of CL adoption in this specific context remain scarce, particularly studies that integrate organizational, technological, external-environmental, and perception-based determinants within a single model. This study aims to examine organizational, technological, external environmental, and perceived-factor determinants that influence CL adoption in Thai manufacturing businesses.
Methodology: : A quantitative research design was employed using a structured questionnaire distributed to managers in Thai manufacturing firms across the automotive, electronics, food, and beverage industries. Data from 300 respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
Results: : Four groups of factors organizational factors (management support and organizational culture), technological readiness, external environmental pressure (supply chain pressure and government regulation), and perceived factors (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, measured as a single composite construct) positively and significantly influenced CL adoption (H1–H4, all supported). The perceived-factor construct was the strongest predictor (β = 0.38), followed by organizational factors
(β = 0.29), technological readiness (β = 0.21), and external environmental pressure
(β = 0.18). The overall model explained 61.2% of the variance in CL adoption
(R² = 0.612, Adjusted R² = 0.594; Cohen's f² = 1.58, indicating a large effect), F(4, 295) = 48.32, p < .001.
Conclusion: The level of CL adoption among Thai manufacturing businesses remains moderate, reflecting substantial room for further development, particularly in higher-complexity practices such as remanufacturing. The findings suggest that building awareness of the tangible benefits of CL in terms of cost reduction and value creation from waste alongside fostering a sustainability-oriented organizational culture, are the primary pathways to accelerating CL adoption. At the policy level, governments should introduce financial incentives and technical support programs tailored to the resource constraints of small and medium-sized enterprises. These findings contribute to the limited empirical literature on CL adoption by testing an integrated Diffusion-of-Innovations/Technology-Acceptance framework in the context of a Southeast Asian developing economy, an intersection that remains underexamined relative to CE research in Europe and East Asia.
