Strategic Model Development for Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainability of Dairy Farming Supply Chains: A Case of Maejo Dairy Cooperative Limited Members
Abstract
This research aimed to (1) examine the strategic factors influencing the efficiency and sustainability of the dairy farming supply chain, and (2) develop a strategic model for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the dairy farming supply chain among members of Maejo Dairy Cooperative Limited. This study employed a mixed methods research approach using an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative population consisted of 49 dairy farmer members of Maejo Dairy Cooperative Limited, selected through purposive sampling. The qualitative phase involved 10 key informants selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The research instruments included questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while inferential statistics were analyzed using correlation analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis and interpretive synthesis.
The findings revealed that: 1) the overall strategic factors were at a high level (x̄ = 4.05, S.D. = 0.53), with collaborative networks showing the highest mean score (x̄ = 4.15, S.D. = 0.50), followed by farm management (x̄ = 4.12, S.D. = 0.48). The overall supply chain outcomes were also at a high level (x̄ = 4.07, S.D. = 0.52). The correlation analysis indicated that all strategic factors were positively related to supply chain efficiency and sustainability at the statistical significance level of 0.01. In particular, collaborative networks showed the strongest relationship with efficiency (r = 0.71) and sustainability (r = 0.69), followed by farm management. These findings reflect that the development of dairy farming supply chains requires systematic collaboration, effective farm management, and integrated data management among stakeholders. 2) The synthesis of quantitative and qualitative findings led to the development of nine strategic models under three major dimensions: efficiency enhancement, value creation, and sustainability development. These models consisted of the Efficient Farm Management Model, Digital Technology Adoption Model, Data Management Model, Value-Added Model, Quality Standard Development Model, Collaborative Network Model, Farmer Capacity Building Model, Environmental Management Model, and Risk Management Model. The findings reflect an integrated supply chain development approach that holistically links economic, social, technological, and managerial dimensions.
