Abstract

Background and Aims: Environmental concerns are increasingly influencing tourists' accommodation choices, transforming environmentally friendly hotels from a niche selling point into a key strategy for building long-term customer relationships. However, research in the Thai context that clearly identifies which dimensions of brand value affect customer loyalty toward green hotels, particularly in the Bangkok metropolitan area, remains limited. This study therefore aimed to: (1) examine the level of brand perceived value in functional, emotional, social, and environmental dimensions; (2) measure customer loyalty in both attitudinal and behavioral aspects; (3) analyze the influence of each value dimension on loyalty; and (4) provide practical recommendations for operators to build brand value that promotes customer loyalty.

Methodology: This quantitative survey research employed a questionnaire adapted from the PERVAL scale with the addition of an environmental dimension. Data were collected online from 400 individuals who had previously stayed at environmentally friendly hotels in the Bangkok metropolitan area, recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation) and multiple regression analysis.

Results: Respondents perceived brand value across all four dimensions at a high level (overall mean = 4.21), with environmental value being the highest (mean = 4.38). Customer loyalty was also at a high level (overall mean = 4.15). Multiple regression analysis revealed that all four value dimensions had statistically significant positive influences on loyalty. Environmental value had the greatest influence (β = 0.41, p < .001), followed by emotional value (β = 0.27, p < .001), social value (β = 0.17, p < .01), and functional value (β = 0.14, p < .05), respectively. Together, the four variables explained 68.2% of the variance in loyalty.

Conclusion: Environmental value is the primary driver of customer loyalty toward environmentally friendly hotels, though emotional, social, and functional values also play significant roles. Operators should position sustainability as a core brand value communicated with sincerity and transparency, rather than merely as compliance with legal requirements. However, limitations of this study include the use of non-probability sampling, which may restrict generalizability to the entire population, and the cross-sectional data collection, which prevents establishing causal relationships definitively.
