Factors Influencing Green Product Consumption Behavior among Young Consumers

Background and Aims: Worsening environmental degradation and accelerating climate change have elevated sustainable consumption to a critical issue in both policy and academic discourse. Although young consumers increasingly express environmental concern, a persistent gap remains between their purchase intentions and actual buying behavior. This research aims to examine the influence of internal factors derived from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) namely attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control alongside two external product-related factors perceived quality and green trust on green purchase intention and consumption behavior among young consumers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region.
Methodology: This quantitative study employed an online questionnaire survey administered to 400 respondents aged 18–35 who resided, worked, or studied in Bangkok and its vicinity, and who had purchased or seriously considered purchasing environmentally friendly products within the preceding six months. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling combined with snowball sampling via online platforms. The instrument utilized five-point Likert scales measuring seven variables. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis.
Results: All three TPB components attitude (β = 0.27, p < .01), subjective norm
(β = 0.18, p < .01), and perceived behavioral control (β = 0.23, p < .01) exerted significant positive effects on green purchase intention, as did perceived quality
(β = 0.17, p < .01) and green trust (β = 0.15, p < .01). The regression model explained 48% of the variance in purchase intention (R² = 0.48). Purchase intention, in turn, significantly predicted actual consumption behavior (β = 0.62, p < .01), accounting for 38% of the variance (R² = 0.38).
Conclusion: The findings affirm the relevance of the TPB framework in the Thai green consumption context and highlight the added value of perceived quality and green trust in narrowing the intention–behavior gap. These results offer practical guidance for businesses and policymakers aiming to encourage sustainable consumption among young people, contributing to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
