Abstract

        The objective of this research aims for studying the level of knowledge and understanding of crime scene investigation amongst police enquiry officers stationed in Nakhon Pathom provincial police region. Population used in this study were 107 police enquiry officers from total 12 police stations in the area of Nakhon Pathom provincial police region. A set of questionnaire was implemented to collect data and a statistical analysis was subsequently applied including percentage, mean and standard deviation.

           Results revealed that police enquiry officers in Nakhon Pathom provincial police region as a whole demonstrated a high level of knowledge and understanding of crime scene investigation which was in accordance with the FBI’s Twelve-Step Process of evidence collection. Steps that most police enquiry officers perceived correctly were as followed, Step 1–Preparation, Step 3–Secure and Protect the Scene, Step 4–Initiate Preliminary Survey, Step 5-Evaluate Physical Evidence Possibilities, Step 6–Prepare Narrative Description, Step 8–Prepare Diagram/Sketch of Scene, Step 10–Record and Collect Physical Evidence, Step 11–Conduct Final Survey and Step 12–Releasing the Crime Scene, whereas other three steps were not likely perceived correctly by most police enquiry officers which included Step 2–Approach the Scene, Step 7–Depict Scene Photographically and Step 9–Conduct Detailed Search. Suggestions as guidelines for crime scene investigation development are that annual training courses, budget and human resources should be more provided.
