ในสังคมไทยมีความเข้าใจผิดเกี่ยวกับประชานิยมอยู่มาก ดังนั้นบทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาความหมายที่แท้จริงของคำว่า “ประชานิยม” ผ่านจากบทเรียนที่เกิดขึ้นในลาตินอเมริกาและนานาชาติ โดยชี้ให้เห็นว่าการศึกษาเรื่องประชานิยม ควรแบ่งออกเป็น “ประชานิยมทางการเมือง” และ “ประชานิยมทางเศรษฐกิจ” โดยผ่านงานศึกษาของ Gino Germani, Torcuato di Tella, Kurt Weyland, Ernesto Laclau, Kirk A. Hawkins, Cas Mudde, Cristóbal Rovira Kaltwasser, Carlos de la Torre, และ Rudi Dornbusch กับ Sebastian Edward โดบอาศัยกรณีศึกษาของประเทศอาร์เจนตินา บราซิล เปรู และ เวเนซุเอลา เป็นตัวอย่างเพื่อจำแนกให้เห็นความแตกต่างของ “ประชานิยมทางการเมือง” กับ“ประชานิยมทางเศรษฐกิจ”
