Abstract

Background and Aims: Twenty-first-century education emphasizes the development of learners’ analytical thinking skills and the effective use of technology. Inquiry-Based Learning using the 5E Instructional Model integrated with interactive video through a web-based platform provides an instructional approach that promotes active learning and enhances students’ understanding of the Thai language topic Parts of Speech. This study investigated the effects of this instructional approach among pre-service elementary teachers. The objectives of the study were to: (1) examine the instructional efficiency of the 5E Inquiry-Based Learning model integrated with web-based interactive video in the course CEE2307 Thai Language for Elementary School Teachers on the topic Parts of Speech; (2) compare the pretest and posttest learning achievement of pre-service elementary teachers after participating in the 5E Inquiry-Based Learning activities integrated with interactive video; and (3) investigate students’ satisfaction with the instructional model.

Methodology: This study employed a quasi-experimental research design using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 40 pre-service elementary teachers enrolled in the Thai Language for Elementary School Teachers course during the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The required sample size was determined using the G*Power program with an effect size of 0.55, a statistical power of 0.95, and a significance level of 0.05, yielding a minimum sample size of 38 participants. To compensate for potential attrition, 40 participants were recruited using simple random sampling. The intervention was conducted over a period of three weeks. The research instruments included: (1) 5E Inquiry-Based Learning lesson plans on Parts of Speech; (2) web-based interactive videos developed using the Edpuzzle platform; (3) a learning achievement test; and (4) a student satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using instructional efficiency (E1/E2), descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), and the dependent samples t-test.

Results: (1) the instructional efficiency of the 5E Inquiry-Based Learning model integrated with web-based interactive video was 81.08/80.00, meeting the established 80/80 efficiency criterion; (2) students’ posttest learning achievement was significantly higher than their pretest achievement at the .01 level of statistical significance; and (3) students’ overall satisfaction with the instructional model was at the highest level.

Conclusion: The findings indicate that the 5E Inquiry-Based Learning model integrated with web-based interactive video is an effective instructional approach that meets the established efficiency criterion. The instructional model successfully enhanced students’ interest and facilitated meaningful learning of Parts of Speech, resulting in significantly higher posttest achievement compared with pretest performance. Furthermore, the participants reported the highest level of satisfaction because they were able to learn at their own pace, receive immediate feedback, and recognize practical ways to integrate educational technology into their future teaching practices
