Abstract

This research aimed to 1) study the current rice farming practices of farmers and their transition to organic rice farming in line with the Sufficiency Economy Theory, 2) compare production and economic factors between conventional and organic rice farming based on the same principles, and 3) enhance the value of organic rice products through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) process involving a group of rice farmers from Yang Yong Subdistrict, Tha Yang District, Phetchaburi Province, focusing on 10 rice fields across 4 villages. The final step included conducting a content analysis to gather contextual data on rice farming in the Yang Yong community, collecting production cost data, and developing quantitative interview and survey tools to analyze the costs and returns of conventional versus organic rice farming aligned with the Sufficiency Economy Theory. It was found that organic rice farming incurred a lower total production cost per rai (unit area) than conventional rice farming by 3,220 baht, representing a 44.35% cost reduction. Furthermore, the development of a model to improve rice production in the organic farming system based on the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy revealed that key factors influencing productivity improvement included farmers’ knowledge and understanding of each rice variety, the application of appropriate farming methods tailored to specific rice varieties, accurate analysis of production costs, and product and packaging development to meet market demands.
