Retraction and Correction Policy

Retraction and Correction Policy

The Journal of Islamic Studies, Prince of Songkla University (JOIS), is committed to preserving the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of the scholarly record. The journal recognizes that, despite rigorous peer review and editorial processes, circumstances may arise in which published content requires correction, clarification, or retraction.

The journal follows the ethical guidelines and best practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Thai Citation Index (TCI). Article retraction is applied only when necessary and based on clear evidence, with the primary aim of maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record.

1 Purpose of Retraction and Correction

The primary purpose of retraction and correction is to ensure the reliability of published scholarship, protect the academic record, and inform readers of significant concerns affecting the validity, originality, or ethical standing of published work.

Retraction is not intended as a punitive action against authors but as a corrective mechanism to safeguard the transparency, credibility, and trustworthiness of scholarly communication.

2 Grounds for Retraction

Articles may be considered for retraction under circumstances including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Redundant or duplicate publication
  • Significant plagiarism
  • Fabrication, falsification, or serious misrepresentation of research data
  • Serious violations of research ethics or publication ethics
  • Major methodological or analytical errors that invalidate findings
  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest that compromise research validity
  • Manipulation or compromise of the peer review process
  • Unauthorized use of copyrighted materials

Retraction may be initiated by the editorial board, authors, institutions, or other credible parties presenting substantiated evidence.

3 Forms of Post-Publication Editorial Action

Depending on the severity and nature of the case, the journal may implement one of the following measures:

3.1 Retraction: Applied when the reliability or integrity of the article is fundamentally compromised.

3.2 Correction (Erratum or Corrigendum): Issued where errors exist but do not invalidate the overall findings.

3.3 Expression of Concern: Published when serious concerns arise but conclusive evidence remains under investigation.

4 Investigation Procedures

Upon receiving allegations or evidence of post-publication issues, the editorial office will initiate a structured and confidential review process. This may include:

  • Examination of documentary evidence
  • Communication with authors
  • Consultation with reviewers
  • Engagement with institutional representatives
  • External expert review where necessary

5 Editorial Decision Authority

Final decisions regarding retraction or correction are made by the editorial board, led by the Editor-in-Chief. Decisions are evidence-based and guided by ethical publishing standards.

6 Retraction Procedure and Outcome

Retracted articles will remain accessible in the journal archive to preserve the completeness of the academic record, clearly identified as RETRACTED. The notice will specify:

  • The title of the article, The reason for retraction, The authority, and The date.

The editorial board may impose additional measures, such as temporary suspension of the author’s right to submit manuscripts for up to five issues.

7 Author-Initiated Retractions

Authors who discover significant errors in their own work must notify the journal promptly. Voluntary retractions in good faith are encouraged.

8 Institutional and Third-Party Involvement

The journal may coordinate with universities or funding agencies in cases involving research misconduct investigations.

9 Relationship to Publication Ethics

This policy aligns with international best practices governing plagiarism, authorship responsibility, and peer review integrity.

10 Commitment to Transparency

All actions are undertaken to maintain the reliability and credibility of published research and ethical editorial stewardship.
