Generation Z Muslims’ Identity Commitment amid Multiculturalism and Social Change: A Case Study of Phuket

Objective: This study aimed to (1) examine the levels of five dimensions related to Muslim identity maintenance among Generation Z in Phuket Province, (2) compare these dimensions by place of origin, and (3) analyze the relationships and effects of the related dimensions on Muslim identity commitment.
Methodology: This quantitative study surveyed 435 Generation Z Muslims residing in Phuket Province using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression.
Research Findings: The findings revealed that Muslim identity commitment (𝒙̅ = 3.62) and adaptation in a multicultural society (𝒙̅ = 3.50) were at high levels, while the other three dimensions were at moderate levels. Significant differences by place of origin were found in 4 of the 5 dimensions. Muslim identity commitment was positively correlated with all four related dimensions, and the significant predictors were adaptation in a multicultural society and religious practice and reflection.
Contributions: These findings can be applied by religious organizations, families, educational institutions, and relevant agencies to strengthen Muslim identity among youth while supporting constructive coexistence in a multicultural society.
