TRUE LOYALTY

Abstract

This research explores the concept of "true loyalty" through a case study of Phra Suriyabhakdee and Lady Im during the reign of King Rama III. Phra Suriyabhakdee was convicted of sending love letters to Lady Im, a royal consort. Following the law, he was sentenced to death. King Nangklao showed mercy towards Phraya Phrakhlang, Suriyabhakdee's father and a high-ranking official. The King suggested Phrakhlang could seek a pardon for his son, allowing him to live under probation. However, Phraya Phrakhlang believed his son's crime was severe. He argued that failing to punish him would undermine the law, insult the King, and tarnish the Bunnag family's reputation as honest servants. Thus, he refused to request a pardon and insisted on his son's execution. Despite the deep sorrow, Phraya Phrakhlang's "true loyalty" stemmed from his commitment to his conscience. He acted as a court official, a fair father, and a Bunnag family member preserving their integrity. In the case of Phra Suriyabhakdee, "true loyalty" did not create conflict between personal ties and public duty.
