Abstract

The objectives of this qualitative research were, firstly, to investigate problems of the application of the Buddhist way of thinking to treatment of drug addicts, and, secondly, to find a guideline for solving the problems of management of drug addict treatment in the Buddhist way. Multi-stage sampling was used for obtaining the sample which consisted of 64 people involved in the project on drug addict capability rehabilitation of the Department of Probation, Ministry of Justice’s Compulsory Treatment in the Buddhist Way, including 1) 10 directors of Provincial Probation Office, 2) 10 deputy/assistant directors of Provincial Probation Office, 3) 14 staff members responsible for drug addict capability rehabilitation, 4) 18 monks/nuns/persons operating drug addict capability rehabilitation activities, and 5) 12 drug addicts who had undergone capability rehabilitation from South Bangkok Criminal Court’s Probation Office and Tak, Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, Mahasarakham, Kanchanaburi, Amnart Charoen, Yasothon, Nan and Saraburi Structured interview form was used as the research tool for data collection through focus group discussion and in-depth interview conducted by the researcher and research assistants. Content analysis was used for data analysis. It was found that the problems of the application of the Buddhist way of thinking to treatment of drug addicts were implementation of the policy and management of rehabilitation activities. The problems of the application of the Buddhist way of thinking to treatment of drug addicts under CIPP Model dimension lied in the management of the Buddhist way project itself and, under management dimension, in the coordination and management in the Buddhist monk’s way. The guideline for solving the above-mention problems is the use of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism consisting of the problem (the nature of suffering), cause of the problem (suffering's origin), objective (suffering's cessation) and action guideline (the way leading to the cessation of suffering).
