The Relationship among Attachment, Relationship Commitment, and Relationship Maintenance among Undergraduate Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the relationship among attachment, relationship commitment, and
relationship maintenance among undergraduate students. Materials and methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. The data was collected by using the following questionnaires; A Short Version of the Revised Experience of Close Relationships Questionnaire (ECR-R-18), the Revised Commitment Inventory, and the Relational Maintenance Behavior Measure (RMBM). The sample consisted of 89 undergraduate students from 4 regional universities in Thailand including Northern, Southern, Northeast, and Central Thailand, who were in heterosexual romantic relationships for at least 6 months and were unmarried. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to analyze data. Results: Anxiety attachment and avoidance attachment were negatively associated with all relationship maintenance behaviors (r = -.217 to -.617). Nevertheless, commitment was positively significantly associated with almost all relationship behaviors (r = .233 to .540), except for networks. Conclusion: It was evident that attachment and commitment can help people to maintain relationships and bonding. If a person has less anxiety attachment and avoidance attachment, or has a lot of commitment in a relationship, it will result in a person showing more relationship maintenance behaviors, which will be beneficial for those who want to continue that relationship.
