The characteristic of gifted students: a qualitative content analysis

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the characteristic of gifted students under the Development and Promotion of Science and Technology Talents Project (DPST).
Materials and methods: Data were collected with 9 key informants who involved with gifted students through in-depth interviews by using snowball technique until obtaining data that was saturated, thus terminated. The tools used to collect data were 1) a demographic questionnaire and (2) a semi-structured interview. Demographic data were analyzed with descriptive statistics while the qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis by defining the quotations, interpreting the meanings, assigning the code descriptions, naming the codes and clustering the association of the codes, respectively. This content analysis was conducted by researcher and Program Atlas.ti (Version 8).
Results: The gifted student characteristics consisted of 9 attributes and 3 components: 1) cognitive component included: Think Like a Scientist, Self-Awareness, Passion to Learn, 2) affective components included: Empathy and Public-Minded, and (3) behavioral component included: Strength-Tough, Stress Management Skill, Communication Skill and Social Skills.
Conclusion: This finding reflects the uniqueness characteristics of gifted student in the Thai context. It could be implemented as a policy suggestion for administrators as well as an empirical knowledge for practitioners in the extension to develop the standard assessment tool or develop appropriate qualification-enhancing guidelines for this group of students later on.
