Abstract

Background and Aims: Mathematical knowledge and skills are essential for developing systematic thinking processes and serve as a foundation for higher education. However, the topic of complex numbers in additional mathematics for Matthayom Sueksa 5 (Grade 11) is abstract and complex, causing many students to experience learning difficulties and misconceptions. This study aimed to: 1) diagnose defects and misconceptions in additional mathematics on complex numbers of Matthayom Sueksa 5 students; and 2) compare these defects and misconceptions across three different study plans.

Methodology: The sample consisted of 115 Matthayom Sueksa 5 students at Rajprachasamasai Phaimathayom Rachadabhisek School under Royal Patronage during the second semester of the 2025 academic year, selected via stratified sampling. The sample included 35 students from a Gifted classroom (Science–Mathematics), 40 students from a regular classroom (Science–Mathematics), and 40 students from a regular classroom (Arts–Mathematics). The research instrument was a parallel diagnostic test for defects and misconceptions comprising 34 four-option multiple-choice items requiring student explanations. The instrument was validated for content validity with the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00, and for option distribution consistency using Chi-square tests, yielding discrimination indices between 0.234 and 0.504, and an overall test reliability coefficient of 0.843. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage statistics.

Results: Overall, students across all three study plans exhibited the highest rate of defects and misconceptions in the aspect of complex number operations (27.8%), followed by the application of definitions, formulas, and properties (26.1%), and the interpretation of complex numbers (25.2%), respectively. When classified by classroom type, students in the regular Arts–Mathematics classroom showed error rates of 40% or higher on multiple items across all aspects: interpretation (4 items), application of definitions/formulas/properties (3 items), and operations (4 items). Comparative analysis revealed that the regular Arts–Mathematics classroom had the highest proportion of students with defects and misconceptions in all three aspects: interpretation (42.5%), application of definitions/formulas/properties (42.5%), and operations (45.0%).

Conclusion: This study demonstrates that Matthayom Sueksa 5 students, particularly those in the Arts–Mathematics study plan, lack deep conceptual understanding and exhibit procedural flaws in complex numbers. The diagnostic insights and identified causes of student errors serve as essential educational information for teachers to refine instructional design, incorporate conceptual learning activities, and deliver targeted remedial instruction to effectively resolve student misconceptions and learning defects.
