บทคัดย่อ
บทความวิจัยเรื่องนี้มุ่งศึกษาการสร้างความเป็นอื่นในอัตลักษณ์ของแฝดติดกัน ในนวนิยายเรื่อง จัน แอนด์ อิน (Chang and Eng) ของดาริน สเตราส์ (Darin Strauss) โดยวิเคราะห์ผ่านกรอบแนวคิดเรื่องกระบวนทัศน์ความพิการ จากการวิเคราะห์ความคิด การกระทำ และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวละครหลักซึ่งเป็นคนพิการกับตัวละครอื่นที่มีร่างกายปกติพบว่า นวนิยายเรื่องนี้นำเสนอให้เห็นว่า ความเป็นอื่นในอัตลักษณ์ของแฝดติดกันเป็นผลพวงมาจากการให้ความหมายร่างกายของแฝดติดกันผ่านกระบวนทัศน์ความพิการเชิงสัญลักษณ์และเชิงการแพทย์ที่ทำให้อัตลักษณ์ของแฝดติดกันอยู่ในภาพแทนของสัญญะที่สื่อถึงสิ่งชั่วร้ายและในรูปของความผิดปกติทางร่างกายที่ต้องรักษาให้หาย บทความวิจัยนำเสนอการวิเคราะห์ความคิดของตัวละครเอกอิน บังเคอร์ (Eng Bunker) ที่เป็นแฝดติดกัน และปฏิสัมพันธ์ของเขากับแฝดจันและตัวละครอื่น ๆ ที่มีร่างกายปกติซึ่งเผยให้เห็นผลกระทบของการมองร่างกายที่พิการผ่านกระบวนทัศน์ดังกล่าวที่มีต่ออัตลักษณ์ของแฝดติดกัน โดยบทความวิจัยนำเสนอความคิดที่ว่า นวนิยายของสเตราส์ได้วิพากษ์การมองร่างกายของแฝดติดกันตามกระบวนทัศน์ทั้งสองที่ตีตราร่างกายที่แตกต่าง ทำให้เรือนร่างที่ไม่เข้ากับบรรทัดฐานร่างกายที่ปกติถูกกดทับและกีดกันให้เป็นอื่น อีกทั้งยังส่งผลให้บุคคลดังกล่าวมีทัศนคติ ในแง่ลบต่อร่างกายของตนเองอันนำไปสู่วามพยายามที่จะ “รักษา” ความแตกต่างทางร่างกายให้เป็นปกติ
