To Be Reread Is To Be Reborn: Reviving Sriburapha’s Legacy through A Rose in the Little Garden

Abstract
This article aims at studying the cultural afterlives of Sriburapha (Kulap Saipradit) in Chamaiporn Saengkrajang’s A Rose in the Little Garden. The novel was written to commemorate the centenary celebration of Sriburapha in 2005. The study focuses on generic and medial aspects of the novel. The study reveals that the Bildungsroman is positioned as a frame to represent the reception of Sriburapha’s works leading to the transformation of an individual. The novel deploys the
intramedial reference and the social life of books for reviving Sriburapha with emphasis on the politics embedded in the act of reading as well as the materiality of the book. Despite the Athazagoraphobia within the Thai socio-cultural context, Sriburapha’s revival through A Rose in the Little Garden and its intermedial properties does not fail to reaffirm the power of literature, the politics of reading and the hope for social reforms.
