Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of art psychotherapy in reducing anxiety among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Bangkok.

Materials and Methods: This study is quasi-experimental research involving a sample of children with ADHD in Bangkok. The participants had scores of 25 or higher on the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) and were aged between 7 and 12 years, totaling 21 children. The parents of the children with ADHD completed a general questionnaire, while the children themselves underwent SCARED screening both before and after participating in art psychotherapy. The statistical methods used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and dependent sample t-test.

Results: Children with ADHD who participated in the art psychotherapy program showed a statistically significant decrease in anxiety levels after the program compared to before participation (t = 3.63, p < 0.001), with a medium effect size (d = 0.79).

Conclusion: The effectiveness of art psychotherapy helps reduce arousal and rebalance the nervous system to a balanced state, leading to a decrease in anxiety levels. This approach can be a valuable method for parents and therapists to apply with children who have ADHD and are experiencing anxiety.
