Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship and influence of technology and social media use on the mental health of Mahasarakham University students. The sample consisted of 400 undergraduate students, selected using stratified random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that technology and social media use were statistically significantly associated with students’ mental health, with a low to moderate strength of association. The regression model explained 22.6% of the variance in mental health (R² = 0.226). The factors that significantly influenced mental health were media usage convenience, knowledge and inspiration seeking, and emotional release or expression.
In contrast, media accessibility, emotional needs, entertainment, and source credibility were not significant predictors of mental health. The findings suggest that the appropriate use of social media may affect students’ mental well-being. Therefore, educational institutions should promote creative media use and the development of media literacy skills to support students’ mental health within the context of a digital society.
