Abstract

Background and Aims: This research aims to investigate the alignment between the primary school Chinese textbook "Huawen" (Book 6) and the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education (HSK Level 3), focusing on vocabulary volume, grammatical structures, lesson topics, and cultural elements. It also evaluates the suitability of the textbook as an instructional material for preparing students for the HSK Level 3 examination.

Methodology: The methodology comprised three main approaches: a literature research method to examine the HSK Level 3 standards and criteria, a textbook analysis method to systematically collect data on vocabulary, grammar, and contents within the textbook, and a comparative analysis method to evaluate discrepancies and alignment between the textbook contents and the standard benchmarks.

Results: Among the 237 new vocabulary items in the textbook, Level 1 and Level 2 words account for 71.7%, while Level 3 words comprise 18.1%. Grammatically, the textbook introduces approximately 35 points, covering only about 15% of the HSK Level 3 grammar requirements. The lesson topics predominantly feature fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, and cultural themes. While the textbook excels in reinforcing learners' foundational knowledge, it lacks sufficient coverage in high-level vocabulary volume and advanced grammatical points required by the standard.

Conclusion: As a standalone textbook, it may be insufficient to fully meet the school's objectives for elevating students' foundational Chinese proficiency to the targeted level. Consequently, it is necessary to supplement vocabulary and grammar during instruction, incorporate review stages, and provide aligned exercises or thought-provoking questions following each lesson to effectively assess and enhance student learning outcomes.
