Abstract

Background and Aims: Mathematics is a fundamental discipline that plays an important role in developing logical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential characteristics for learning and living in the twenty-first century. Mathematical knowledge helps develop fundamental numerical concepts and logical reasoning, which serve as an important foundation for learning in other fields of study, particularly at the elementary education level. This research aimed to: 1) compare the mathematics learning achievement of Grade 2 students on the topic of pictographs between an experimental group receiving instruction through educational games and a control group receiving conventional instruction; and 2) investigate the satisfaction of Grade 2 students with learning through educational games in mathematics on the topic of pictographs.

Methodology: This study employed an experimental research design using an experimental group and a control group with pretest and posttest measurements. The population consisted of 99 Grade 2 students from three classrooms at Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School, Bangna Campus, Bangkok, during the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The students in Classes 2/1 and 2/3 were taught in mixed-ability classrooms. Therefore, the researcher used a lottery-based randomization method to select the classroom for the experiment. The sample consisted of 33 Grade 2 students from Class 2/3 at Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School, Bangna Campus, during the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling, with the classroom serving as the sampling unit.

Results: The findings revealed that: 1) The Grade 2 students in the experimental group who received instruction through educational games achieved significantly higher learning outcomes than those in the control group who received conventional instruction, at the statistical significance level of .05. 2) The Grade 2 students' satisfaction with learning through educational games in mathematics on the topic of pictographs was at a high level (x̄ = 2.74, S.D. = 0.45).

Conclusion: 1) Regarding mathematics learning achievement on the topic of pictographs, the Grade 2 students in the experimental group who received instruction through educational games demonstrated significantly higher learning achievement than the students in the control group who received conventional instruction, at the statistical significance level of .05. 2) Regarding the Grade 2 students' satisfaction with learning through educational games in mathematics on the topic of pictographs, the findings indicated that the students' satisfaction was at a high level.
