ANALYSIS OF CONFUCIAN WOODCARVING FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIBLE TOYS IN SHANDONG PROVINCE, PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

The purpose of this qualitative research is to 1) examine the woodcarving art of Confucius during the Spring and Autumn period and in the contemporary period, and 2) analyze the connections between the historical and modern interpretations of Confucian woodcarving art to explore how traditional techniques and philosophies can be integrated into contemporary collectible toy design. In the study, a document analysis was conducted focusing on the origin, historical significance, production techniques, materials and craftsmanship of Confucian woodcarvings in Shandong Province. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 experts, including toy designers, academics and cultural scholars, to analyze how these traditional artistic elements can be applied to modern cultural products.
The findings reveal that: 1) Confucian woodcarving in Shandong is a culturally unique and historically rich form of sculpture. Beyond its esthetic value, it possesses high collectible potential, especially when enhanced by improved production quality and narrative integration.
2) The integration of Confucian artistic elements into contemporary collectible toys — through storytelling, symbolism and cultural meaning — can enhance the emotional value and market appeal of these products. Such integration not only attracts collectors and cultural consumers but also promotes the preservation and development of traditional Chinese culture in modern contexts.
