A Study of English-Thai Translation of Conditional Sentences Based on a Learner Corpus

Abstract
This article presents the results of a study examining the translation of conditional sentences from English into Thai, based on a learner corpus compiled from pre- and post-translation tests. Test takers were 60 undergraduate English major students at the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, who were enrolled on the Introduction to English-Thai Translation course. The objective of this research was to identify problems learners encountered when translating conditional sentences and offer guidance for solving problems more effectively. The computerassisted corpus analysis revealed that 17 keywords were frequently used, consisting of modal verbs, aspect markers, and adverbs. Frequency lists were then organized as document-feature matrixes. The correspondence analysis of those matrixes was conducted to explore the correspondence between the function words’ frequency patterns and types of conditional sentences. The results clearly distinguished conditional sentences in Thai translations between two types of real conditionals and three types of unreal conditionals. Although in Thai, there are no verb inflections to indicate “Tense” - the device distinguishing types of English conditionals - Thai learners compensated by using a variety of Thai function words to render original meaning and by adding adverbs, particularly when translating unreal conditionals. The results suggested that the learners had a better understanding of English conditional sentences and could effectively solve their translation problems.
