Soliloquy in a Thai Novel: In Family, We Trust

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing soliloquy in a Thai novel, In Family, We Trust, through three female characters’ of Jira-anan family based on structure of language theory and soliloquy concept. Textual analysis along with data triangulation was used to analyze the first edition of this novel. The results revealed that the novelist presented soliloquy through three female characters in 7 of 30 sections. The features of soliloquy in this novel are similar to other aesthetic communication media which are 1) the characters are conscious during their communication; 2) the characters used first person pronouns and intimate language styles; 3) the character are beings both sender and receiver as the same time; and 4) the content of messages are their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, the novelist intended to take advantages of the soliloquy to disclose the background of characters and to promote the unity of thought.
