Abstract

This article aims to study Lanna traditional desserts used as offerings to worship
spirits in a dance ritual called “Kalok Dance”. The study focuses only on the dancing
style performed particularly in Chiang Mai province. This ritual consists of 3 type
of “Fon” or dances to worship three different spirits which are Phee Phan, Phee
Mod, and Phee Meng. The belief in these three spirits is considered an influence
of Mon culture. The power of female in a family is portrayed through their monopoly
of culinary knowledge and skills in making desserts which are considered an
important part of the ritual. The number of desserts is related to the complexity
of the ritual. The deserted presented in Kalok Dance also reflect food stability and
the expectation for family prosperity.
