The Development of a Suitable Model for Taking Care of the Well-being of the Elderly Living Alone in the Countryside, Ubon Ratchatani Province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to study the appropriate health care of the elderly living alone in the countryside; 2) to study the health care needs of the elderly; 3) to develop a suitable model for taking care of the health of the elderly; and 4) to prepare policy proposals for appropriate health care for the elderly. This was a mixed- method research. The population consisted of 14,705 elderly living alone in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The sample group consisted of 389 elderly living alone in the countryside of Ubon Ratchathani Province by simple random sampling. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with 23 key informants, and 15 participants in small group discussions, which were obtained using a purposive method. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and content analysis. Descriptive method was used to present the data.


The results of the research found that; 1) Taking Care of the Well-being for the elderly living alone in the countryside; Ubon Ratchathani Province was overall at a high level (gif.latex?\bar{x} = 3.46, S.D. = 0.85); 2) The need for health care for the elderly overall was at the highest level (gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.24, S.D. = 0.82); 3) A suitable model for taking care of the well-being of the elderly in the health dimension It consisted of taking care of physical well-being according to the 10 key principle, and taking care of mental well-being according to the 5 key principle. Participation dimension consisted of participation in group activities, clubs on various occasions. Security dimension consisted of a residential area which was convenient, easy and safe, and income that was sufficient and appropriate; and 4) Policy proposals include policy guidelines for promoting and developing the elderly living alone in the countryside to live happily and safely.
