Abstract

The researcher aims at proposing the development of a model to promote the observance of the five precepts in community around Wat Sarod, Bangkok. This development of Wat Sarod community is under the “Five-Precept Observing Community Project” which aims at fostering reconciliation through the use of Buddhist teachings. Wat Sarod community differs from rural community in that it is an urban community surrounded by people from various places with diverse cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Wat Sarod is the center of the community for organizing various activities and fostering peaceful coexistence among the people. The mobilization of the project in the urban community relies on activities integrated with the five precepts, which are regarded as a humanitarian principle and a way of practice for developing the whole human being. From applying the Five-Precept Observing Community Project in the development of Wat Sarod community results in 'Rat-Burana-Sīla-Boworn' model, which consists of the following components: 1) Rat (people), 2) Burana (renovation), 3) Sīla (precepts), and 4) Boworn (village, temple, school). The model-based development yields a new body of knowledge in the following four areas: 1) Clean physical environment in which areas within the temple are rapidly changing as they have become clean and shady; 2) Clean behavior in which community members follow the five precepts and recognize their significance in everyday life; 3) Clean mind in which community members are happy as a result of following the five precepts. Furthermore, there are 61 meditation centers in Bangkok where people can cultivate their minds to become more peaceful and awakened; and 4) Clean wisdom in which community members follow the five precepts with knowledge and understanding of Buddhist way of life, as well as having a religious studies center that provides Buddhist studies to Wat Sarod community.
