Abstract

The research article consisted of the following objectives: 1) to investigate the efficiency of the school project for the elderly associated with Buddhist successful aging; and 2) to explore the correlation between psychological attributes and/ or situations related to Buddhist successful aging. The study employed a quantitative research method. The sample group included 395 elderlies in Chiang Rai Province. Data were collected using questionnaires with rating scales, and construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability level ranged from 0.56 to 0.76, and the data collected were evaluated using frequency, percentage, mean, median, and variance. The research hypothesis was tested by three-way MANOVA.

According to the results of the study, the elderly who participated in the school project exhibited more Buddhist social support behavior and Buddhist lifestyle than those who did not participate. These results were found in the overall group as well as in the subgroups. Moreover, the elderly who participated in the much-generative project were found to have more ability to control their behavior in leading a Buddhist life and to exhibit more Buddhist social support behavior than the elderly who did not participate in the less-generative project and, as a consequence, were less able to control their behavior in leading a Buddhist life. These results were discovered in the subgroups, i.e., male and female elderly. The suggestions include that the school for the elderly should focus on activities that promote expansion and the ability to control their behavior in leading a Buddhist life, which is an important aspect that supports Buddhist successful aging.
