A Mindfulness-Based Communication Approach to Reducing Conflict in Marriage

Abstract

The research article consisted of the following objectives: 1) to investigate the concepts and theories of communication to reduce conflict in marriage; 2) to explore a mindfulness-based communication based on Buddhism; and 3) to propose a mindfulness-based communication approach to reducing conflict in marriage. Documentary research was used in the study, and the data gained from the relevant documents were analyzed and discussed using content analysis method.       


From the study, the following results are found: 1) Communication in marriage includes both verbal and nonverbal expression. Communication approach to reduce conflict refers to peaceful communication through the act of empathy, deep listening, and unbiased judgment. This includes expressing feelings through direct reflection, and requesting things with words of love and kindness. 2) Buddhism emphasizes the use of mindfulness in the contemplation of thoughts, actions, and feelings through learning and taking action. This includes all forms of communication that are based on piyavācā (kindly speech), whether verbal and nonverbal expression.3) A mindfulness-based communication approach to reducing conflict in marriage can be divided into four steps which are: (1) A mindfulness-based communication to prevent conflict, specifically recalling the love that was once there, empathy, and the use of politeness, love, and kindness; (2) A mindfulness-based communication when there is conflict, specifically managing and controlling one's emotions before communicating, not jumping into conclusions, talking and advising each other rationally; (3) A mindfulness-based communication to restore relationship, specifically the present communication without reviving the past; and (4) A mindfulness-based communication to develop and maintain love and relationship, specifically improving oneself mindfully, putting oneself in the shoes of the other side, listening to and understanding the other side. This includes the love-based communication for the other side to acknowledge on a regular basis. The new body of knowledge is put into a model called “4 Steps to Mindful Love Communication.”
