Competitiveness of the Herb and Food Industry Cluster, Amnat Charoen: Analysis from the Outlook of Producer in a Vertical Industrial System

Abstract
This research article aimed to 1) assess the competitiveness and 2) propose the guidelines for increasing the competitiveness of the herb and food industry cluster in Amnat Charoen Province analyzing from the outlook of producers in a vertical Industrial System.
The quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the study. The sample in the quantitative methodology was 27 small and medium enterprises that were grouped into agro-processing clusters including upstream such as herb farmers, intermediate such as processing herb entrepreneurship, and downstream industries such as traders or distributors. The questionnaire with a four-level evaluation scale was developed from the diamond model by using 4 evaluating scales. The research statistics were percentage and mean. Key informants in qualitative methodology were 17 persons including a board of the herb and food industry cluster, Amnat Charoen, the representatives from Amnat Charoen Public health office, 7th industrial promotion officers, and the consultants from Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University. Data were collected during a brainstorming meeting through focus group and analyzed with content and descriptive analysis.
The research result was: 1) the overview ability of the Thai herb and food industry cluster in Amnat Charoen province was moderate. When considering each aspect found that there were 2 strengths, demand conditions, and factor conditions while firm strategy, structure and rivalry, related, supporting Industries, chance and government were moderate. 2) Using the research result for proposing the strategy as follow: to create value in herb and food product by focusing on the standard of product and packaging development which meet the market needs, increasing the product value by using technology and innovation, and promoting the upstream industry and supply chain.
