Democratic Citizenship Characteristics Affecting Communication Arts Students’ Competency in Media, Information, and Digital Literacy at Rajabhat University in the Northern Region

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the characteristics of democratic citizenship that affected the competency of media information and digital literacy in 4 aspects of 1) accessibility, 2) analysis, criticizing, and evaluation, 3) content creation of media information, and 4) application and transformation of communication arts undergraduate students in Rajabhat universities in the northern region. The samples of this study included 667 of the 1st to 4th year communication arts majors from 8 Rajabhat universities in the northern region. Questionnaires were used as research instrument to collect data. All copies of questionnaires were returned. The statistical analysis performed in this study were frequency, percentage, mean score, standard deviation, correlation coefficient, and multiple regression.  


The research findings revealed that there were five out of eight characteristics of democratic citizenship including 1) critical thinking and rationality, 2) respects for laws and regulations, 3) political participation, 4) awareness of public interest, and 5) commitment to justice and fairness that affected the competency of media information and digital literacy in all 4 aspects with Adjust R-squared between free variables of the five characteristics of accessibility at 58.6, analysis criticizing and evaluation at 56.2, content creation of media information at 56.7, and application and transformation at 56.1, respectively.
