Boeng Fon Khong Sai Moon: Creative Dance from the Wisdom of Gong Production of OTOP Nawatwithi Tourism Community of Ban Sai Moon, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

This research aimed to study gong production step in Ban Sai Mun Community, Phibun Mangsahan District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, and to design creative dance performances from the wisdom of producing gongs to be unique of the community. The study was qualitative research divided into three phases. Phase 1 was to study related research papers. Phase 2 was to collect research data from 9 key informants, selected by purposive sampling, using group discussion to collect data about the gong production process. The interviews were conducted with 15 people who had experience or had performed in folk entertainment, selected by snowball sampling, to collect data about local arts and culture and entertainment. Phase 3 was to analyze data and design a performance of traditional Isan folk dance according to the principles of creative dance to be the unique of the community.


The results showed that the main steps in the gong production of Ban Sai Moon started from the design of the gong, welding of steel or brass plates, forging the nipples, tuning, and drawing pattern. The identity of the Sai Moon gong is the 9-nipple gong, referring to the 9-pointed gong. The design of the folk dance performance held to the five principles of the creative dance as follows. 1) The styles of the performance. They were divided into 3 parts. The first part began with the introduction in Ubon rhythm with the sound of Kan (a reed mouth organ in northeastern Thailand). The second part was the dance along with the lyrics and rhythm of the song. The third part was the dance along with the rhythm of the tom-tom and the presentation of the production of Sai Moon gong in the performance. 2) Dance moves and deployment. Dance moves were designed from local and Thai dance moves. The style of traditional tom-tom procession was used in the deployment. 3) Music and songs for the performance. Folk music accompanying the melody of Isan, Lam Soeng, Lam Ploen, and tom-tom was used. The lyrics were based on the slogan and identity of the community. 4)Costumes and props. Local fabrics and Mudmee sarongs were used, as well as the ornaments were designed to reflect the identity of the community. 5) The occasions of the performance. It was performed to welcome tourists or visitors as well as performed in a festive and merit-making event in the village.
