Main Article Content
Abstract
The research article aimed at studying: 1) the contexts of politics, conflicts, and reconciliation in accordance with democracy; 2) the contexts of politics and conflicts influencing reconciliation in accordance with democracy; and 3) concepts in building reconciliation in accordance with democracy. The study applied a qualitative research method by studying documents and in-depth interviews. A sample group was selected by way of semi-structured interview consisted of politicians, media, and scholars, in a total of 17 persons. From the study, the following results are found: The populist policies have changed the political structure with the following results: the government does not rely on the middle class; the biased benefits given to some specific business groups who are allies; the interference in the bureaucracy; media hegemony; independent organizations vying for power and benefits of corrupt politicians collaborating with government officials and political entrepreneurs; independent organizations are dominated by political powers; and the army uses conflicts to justify the coup. The people lack knowledge of democracy as they do not have country leaders, the seek for benefits, the exploitation and the use of influence to access state resources in which economic and social inequality are always related, the lack of opportunity for people to take part in judicial process, and the unjust system as a tool for gaining power of politicians. The approaches for reconciliation need time to fix, heal, and prevent conflicts in the future. This relies on the termination of confrontation, the building of trust for equal justice, the restoration and promotion of relationship, and the exchange of perspectives. The study aims at having the government including all political parties that are involved with conflict, the media, and people to understand democracy the right way so that they can disseminate the facts of conflict as a lesson learned and be able to transform the conflict into a sustainable reconciliation.
