Development Process for Secondary School Students’ Participation in Religious Activities

Abstract

This research is a qualitative research aims to 1) study factors that affect the participation of religious activities of secondary school students, and 2) study the development process for participation in religious activities of secondary school students. The study was conducted by participating in religious activities along with a group of 10 main informants, namely a group of 10 third-graders at Wat Pa Chomphuphan, Sakon Nakhon Province, analyzed the data by content analysis and then making an inductive conclusion.


The results showed that 1) key factors of students' decision to participate in religious activities are three things: joining a group of friends, participation in exotic activities and spending free time. 2) The seven development processes that occurred are; activity model development process by learning and developing concentration from the nature of Wat Pa, the development process of the monks with examples of teachings that are easily accessible point out the benefits of principles that can be applied immediately in daily life, family development process by trusting or respecting students' decisions and supporting students' creative learning, community development process by being open to understanding the difference and trust to give students the opportunity to be part of the community, school development process by creating new activities according to the interests of students or continuously support students to participate in activities, the process of developing students' external behaviors by changing lifestyle and learning to live with what is, the process of developing students' internal mindset through the development of consciousness and intelligence see the value of concentration. These processes are interrelated as a learning ecosystem, aiming towards the threefold training; Sila (morality), Samathi (concentration), and Panya (wisdom). This will make students become smart, good people and happy according to the Thai educational goals.
