Development of a Model for Teaching and Learning in Biology Secondary School Year 4 by Integrating with the Five Precepts in Buddhism

Abstract

The research article consisted of the following objectives: 1) to investigate the conditions of problems with teaching and learning management in biology subject of the 4th secondary school students by integrating with the observance of the five precepts in Buddhism subject; 2) to develop the teaching and learning management model in biology subject for the 4th secondary school students by integrating with the observance of the five precepts in Buddhism subject; and 3) to present a model for the teaching and learning development in biology subject for the 4th secondary school students by integrating with the observance of the five precepts in Buddhism subject. The study applied both qualitative research by studying documents and experimental research by conducting in-depth interviews with 24 key informants as well as the focus group discussion with 7 experts. A model was experimented with the 4th secondary school students in Nakornluang Udomrat Wittaya School, for a total of 30 persons. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, principle component analysis, and content analysis.  


From the study, the following results are found: 1) Students lack understanding in biology subject as well as motivation in observing the five precepts in Buddhism subject. 2) The development of teaching and learning model in biology subject by integrating with the observance of the five precepts in Buddhism subject requires the implementation of learning management plan in biology which includes explanation, understanding, experiment, and action. 3) From developing the teaching and learning model in biology subject by integrating with the observance of the five precepts in Buddhism subject, it is found that students will learn well only when teaching and learning consists of the following methods: (1) an explanation with content ranging from simple to difficult in order to ensure correct comprehension; (2) an action and experiment to provide students with understanding and vision from real-life study; and (3) an integration with various subjects to enhance understanding and apply in daily life.
