An Analysis of Science Textbook for Lower Secondary Education During10TH- 12TH National Economic and Social Development Plan (2007-2021)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the coherence and the progressiveness of science textbooks content for lower secondary education accordance with the 10th through the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2007-2021). Through the gathering of printed documentation comprised of eighteen textbooks from three publishers, this study employed a documentary research approach using content analysis method. The author created the criteria by considered the characteristics related to science teaching in Thailand that appear in 10th - 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2007-2021) including other secondary sources. The criteria to be considered in 10 characteristics were 1. Supporting to creative thinking, critical thinking, and problem solving. 2. Supporting to Innovation. 3. Co-friendly development, aware of natural disasters. 4. Supporting to wisdom culture. 5. The integration of knowledge in science and technology. 6. Presenting something modern Near the student. 7. Getting ready for 21st century skills. 8. Supporting to technological safety. 9. Supporting to the local education knowledge. 10. Adhering to the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy. The research results have shown that most substantial content of scientific thinking such as critical reasoning, creative reasoning, problem-solving appears to be founded in every textbook. However, some characteristics such as sufficiency economy philosophy, innovation creation, local learning center and integrated learning that only shown in some textbooks.


The research results were found as follows; The textbooks for each period of the National Economic and Social Development Plan are unique. Some of them focus on presenting scientific issues through the situations facing the world. While some may value skill development through activities. All textbooks are unique in some way in accord with each of the three national economic and social development plans covering the 2007-2021 period. Some characteristics are more common while a few others differs according to permissible variations from one publisher to another at the time. Therefore, teachers should consider the particular objectives and subject contents of each particular textbook before deciding on its select to use.
