Lifestyles and Social Welfare Needs of the Elderly in Trang Province

Abstract

This research aimed 1) to study the lifestyle and social welfare needs of the elderly in Trang Province; 2) to compare the social welfare needs of the elderly by demographic variables; and 3) to explore the relationship between lifestyle and social welfare needs of the elderly. This research employed a mixed method combining a quantitative and qualitative research methods.  In the quantitative research component, the sample consisted of 400 person in 10 districts. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation. t-test and One- way ANOVA. For the qualitative research used in-depth interviews of 32 key person of the elderly and content analysis.


The result found that 1) The average level of opinion on the lifestyle of the elderly in Trang province, was overall at the high level (gif.latex?\bar{x}=3.86, S.D.=.573). In terms of the level of social welfare needs of the elderly was at the highest level (gif.latex?\bar{x}=4.21, S.D.= .612). The social service needs were rated as the highest average scores, followed by the needs on health care, social security, employment and income, housing, education, and recreation, respectively. 2) The results of comparing the social welfare needs were revealed that when classified by municipal and non-municipal areas, religion and age of the elderly had a statistically significant on the welfare at the level of .05 and .01 respectively. By analyzing each aspect, the researchers found that the elderly people require the highest different welfare in the recreational aspect. 3) The result of the relationship analysis between lifestyles and the social welfare needs revealed that the overall relationship had a statistically significant positive relationship at the level of .01 (r = .487, p =.000). The results obtained from the qualitative research are consistent with the quantitative research results. The results of the qualitative research were in the same direction as the quantitative research.
