The Development of an Educational English Reading Exercise through Transactional Strategy Instruction to Develop Reading – Writing Skills of Chiang Rai Rajabhat University Students

Abstract

The purposes of the research were: 1) to develop and test the efficiency of an educational English reading exercise through transactional strategy instruction based on the criterion of 80/80; 2) to compare the students’ ability in English reading and writing of before and after using the exercises; and 3) to explore students’ opinions towards the exercises. The study applied mixed-methods research by way of quantitative and qualitative methods by employing a one group pretest-postest design. A sample group consisted of 25 students who were the 3rd year students of Educational Faculty at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University by means of sample random sampling. The research instruments for data collection were: 1) an educational English reading exercise through transactional strategy instruction; 2) an English achievement test on the ability in English reading and wring; and 3) a survey on students’ opinions towards the exercises. The t-test was used to analyze the obtained quantitative data in order to compare students’ ability in English reading-writing of before and after using the exercises. Mean and the standard deviation (S.D.) were also used to evaluate the students’ opinions towards the exercises. The qualitative data were analyzed by ways of content analysis and presented in a descriptive method. The results of the study were as follows: 1) The efficiency score of the exercises was equal to 80.15/82.03. The mean score of the English reading and writing formative test from 8 lessons was equal to 80.15 while the posttest was 82.03, which was higher than the set criteria of 80/80. 2) The students’ ability in English reading and writing after studying was higher with a statistical significance at 0.05 level, indicating the mean score after using the exercises equal to 42 with a standard deviation at 3.50. 3) The students’ opinions toward the exercises overall were at the highest level with a mean (x ̅) equal to 4.78 and a standard deviation (S.D.) of 0.17.
