The Development of Leaning Activity Package to Improve Reading and Writing Skills of Elementary School Grade 1-4 at Wat Pa Thampootei School Thong Pha Phum District Kanchanaburi

Abstract

The research article consisted of the following objectives: 1) to study the problems and needs of an integrated learning activity package; 2) to create an integrated learning activity; 3) to experiment an integrated learning activity; and 4) to assess an integrated learning activity to promote reaching and writing skills of the 1st – 4th secondary school students at Wat Pa Thampootei school. The study applied a Research and Development (R&D) process. The target group consisted of 136 persons by means of purposive sampling with the selection criteria which was the schools under the Education Quality Development Program and Local Development Project with higher education institutions as mentors for the network of higher education in lower central region per fiscal year 2018. The said schools had a multicultural characteristic with students who had learning achievement on reading and pronunciation overall lower than the criteria. There were 5 types of research instrument: 1) a record form for focus group discussion; 2) a record form for interview; 3) an integrated learning activity package; 4) a record form for observing the happiness behavior of students in the class; and 5) an assessment form of reading and writing ability of the 1st – 4th elementary school students. All of the instruments passed the quality testing by experts and the activity package was tested for efficiency before being applied. The acquired data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation (S.D.), percentage, the efficiency of activity package, and t-test. The results of the research are found as follows: 1) Wat Pa Thampootei School, with a multicultural characteristic, wants to enhance the quality of students; 2) The arrangement of an integrated learning activity i.e., music, arts, Thai language, social studies, and physical education is appropriate to the school context; 3) The results after the use of an integrated learning activity in all 4 packages are found to have efficiency above 80/80 set criterion; and 4) The results of the assessment found that the reading and writing ability of the 1st – 4th elementary school students after attending the research are higher than before attending with a statistical significance at 0.05 level. After attending the activity, students at all levels are found to have the happiness behavior at a high level (gif.latex?%5Cbar%7Bx%7D = 3.93)
