Social Buddhist Process with Prevention of Unwanted Pregnancy in Teenagers in Phayao Province

Abstract

The research has three objectives: 1) to study the cause of unwanted pregnancies in Phayao Province; 2) to study the social process for protecting unwanted pregnancies in teenagers in Phayao Province; 3) to propose the Buddhist teachings to protect the unwanted pregnancies in teenagers in Phayao Province. This is a qualitative research through a structured interview and attitude assessment form which conducted from 25 key informants. The data analysis from interview form is used by typological analysis through organizing the data and interpreting it. The attitude assessment form is used by descriptive statistics that are frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results show that 1) the causes of unwanted pregnancies in teenagers occurred from various factors such as social media that inspired the imitated behavior, request of social acceptance from friends, lack of sex studies, normal values and attitudes towards sex and relationship in school age, and lack of training from parents. 2) For the social process for protecting it, the training of sex studies to students can decrease unwanted pregnancies, abortion, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Furthermore, the primary institutions such as family, religion, and education design the social process to teach about sex studies such as verbal teaching, demonstrating a good behavior, inspiriting by rewards. 3) The application of Buddhist teachings to protect the issue is that the BOWORN community (Home, Monastery, and School) has to perform the strategies of Buddhist way in lifestyle for protecting the unwanted pregnancies in teenagers, emphasize on threefold training (Morality, Meditation, and Wisdom), family pays the roles in Buddhist teaching of six directions, be loving-kindness (four sublime states) as the basis of life, the institutions of family and health care center nurturing well-being (four bases of sympathy), and institution of religion practicing the mind to support teenagers developing themselves according to Buddhadhamma integrally, shame at doing evil and fear of the results of it (Hiri Ottapa), knowing how to restrain one’s own mind (Dama), selecting the good friends (kalyāṇamitta), diligent effort in doing the thing concerned (Iddhipadā, intellect to know and consider the impacts from media (Yonisomanasikāra), and considering kālāma Sutta, all these are able to help teenagers living in right way.
