Participation of Community to Corporate Social Responsibility of Small Industry

Abstract

The objectives of this research are 1) to study the principles and patterns of social responsibility activities of industrial sector operating with the community and 2) to study the process of participation and compare the level of community engagement in social responsibility activities between companies participating in the project “Corporate Social Responsibility, Department of Industrial Works: CSR-DIW” and companies who did not participate in the project. This is a qualitative research conducted by studying from documents and in-depth interviews along with observing 2 important stakeholders including both executives and operators of social responsibility projects, community leaders, and villagers of United Palm Oil Industry Public Company Limited, Nuea Khlong District in Krabi Province who participated in the project Corporate Social Responsibility and compare with Isan Palm Industry Development Co., Ltd., Wanon Niwat District Sakon Nakhon Province which is the company who did not participate in the project. The results found that 1) the patterns of social responsibility activities of both companies are relevant to the assessment criteria of the social responsibility activity standards of small-sized industrial factories specified by the Department of Industrial Works. However, the United Palm Oil Industry Public Company Limited has more comprehensive assessment results according to the standard principles. Moreover, 2) in the aspect of community participation education, United Palm Oil Industry Public Company Limited is not yet clear on how to participate in getting benefits. Isan Palm Industry Development Co., Ltd. did not have community participation in the evaluation. Nevertheless, to raise the level of community participation, cooperation between the industry and the community should be established, relevant to behaviors according to international standards, and should be integrated throughout the organization.
