Situations of Innovative Learning Method for Nursing Students in Nursing College under the Praboromarajchanok Institute in the Northeast of Thailand

Abstract

This mixed methods research was to be a part of dissertation project titled Strategies of Instructors’ Potential Development in Innovative Learning Method for Nursing Students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing Sunpasithiprasong. The purposes of this study aimed to study the situations of innovative learning method for nursing students. A study was conducted at 6 nursing colleges, under the Praboromarajchanok Institute, located in the northeast of Thailand. One hundred sixty-nine nursing faculties who were recruited via simple random sampling completed a survey containing the characteristics of health innovator as perceived by instructors questionnaire and the instructors’ knowledge of innovative thinking questionnaire. A purposive sampling was used to access 6 academic deputy directors and 12 nursing faculties to complete the open-ended questions related to strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of innovative learning. Quantitative data was analyzed via descriptive statistics and qualitative data was analyzed by utilizing content analysis. 


          The results of research were showed that nursing instructors rated their perceived of health innovator characteristics at the highest level and knowledge of innovative thinking at medium level. The qualitative analysis indicated that the effective process of innovation, the importance of innovative learning and learners, and the beliefs about the standard and effectiveness of innovative learning were the strengths of innovative learning methods. On the other hand, the participants revealed that lack of self-confidence to create an innovation, uncertain business value of innovation, and inadequate collaboration were weaknesses on innovative teaching. Moreover, participants viewed that technological advancement, and learning exchange forum were opportunities impacted innovative learning skills for nursing students. On the other hand, threats involved innovative learning strategies were a limited number of faculty and restrictions on government financial regulations. This study recommends that developing innovative teaching skills for instructors and promoting relevant factors consisting of organization management, curriculum management and learning support management would help to improve innovative learning.
