"Motherhood" In the How-to Book

Abstract

            This article aimed to display the idea of motherhood in the how-to book to prepare motherhood. This study found that those books constituted, reproduced and instruct the idea of motherhood,  for instance, mothers were supposed to have a “good” physical features or a perfect slender body, an up-to-date taste and lifestyle, good financial status, good education and a good spouse. These ideologies were conveyed through linguistic strategies including choice of words, intertextuality, presupposition, affirmation, and intimate speech styles.
