Abstract

This research article aimed to investigate the effects of English language background on English writing anxiety among undergraduate students. The study employed a survey research design. The sample consisted of 120 undergraduate students enrolled in a General English course, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as comparative analysis of anxiety levels at the .05 level of statistical significance.

The findings revealed that most participants were enrolled in three major fields of study: Business Administration and Management, Agriculture and Animal Science, and Language Studies, including English, Chinese, and Japanese. The participants demonstrated a moderate level of English proficiency (equation = 3.08, SD = 0.78) and a moderate-to-low level of English writing background (equation = 2.72, SD = 0.84). Approximately 72% of the students reported using artificial intelligence tools and Google Translate to assist in writing English sentences. The highest level of writing anxiety was associated with being unexpectedly required to write in English (equation = 3.58, SD = 1.03), followed by feelings of nervousness and pressure when writing under time constraints (equation = 3.56, SD = 1.07). Furthermore, students from non-language majors exhibited significantly higher levels of English writing anxiety than those majoring in languages at the .05 level of statistical significance.
