The Study of Learning Achievement and Satisfaction with Learning using STAD Cooperative Learning Technique of the Third Year Journalism Students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: (1) to compare the learning achievement of third-year journalism students after learning through the STAD cooperative learning technique with the criterion of 75 percent, and (2) to study the students’ satisfaction with learning through the STAD cooperative learning technique in the Documentary Production course. The sample consisted of 55 third-year students majoring in Journalism at Guangxi Normal University for Nationalities during the second semester of the 2024 academic year. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling. The research instruments were: (1) lesson plans based on the STAD cooperative learning technique, (2) a 30-item achievement test with difficulty indices ranging from 0.40 to 0.67, discrimination indices ranging from 0.20 to 0.67, and a Lovett reliability coefficient of 0.85, and (3) a 20-item satisfaction questionnaire with item-objective congruence (IOC) values ranging from 0.60 to 1.00 and a Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.88.

The research employed a one-group posttest-only design. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and one-sample t-test.

          The findings revealed that: (1) The students’ learning achievement after learning through the STAD cooperative learning technique was significantly higher than the 75 percent criterion at the .05 level of significance (t = 26.75, p < .05). (2) The students’ overall satisfaction with the learning activities was at the highest level (x̄ = 4.86, S.D.=0.32).
