Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic poses work strains on healthcare personnel (HCP) globally and affects both physical and mental fatigue among HCP including their families. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlation of burnout syndrome (BS) and work-family conflict (WFC) among HCP in healthcare facilities for COVID-19 patients.

Method: A combined to cross-sectional survey was conducted between September 2021 to May 2022. An electronics questionnaire was sent to frontline HCP in 14 special healthcare facilities set up temporary to care for COVID-19 patients and combined with retrospective frontline HCP’s data collected by Hatyai’s hospital among COVID-19 pandemic.  This comprised the assessment of Maslach’s BS in 3 dimensions: Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP) and Reduced Personal Accomplishment (PA) and Netemeyer's WFC in 2 dimensions: Work Interference with Family (WIF) and Family Interference with Work (FIW) The relationship between both scores was determined using Pearson correlation.

Results: Of 202 HCP participating in the study, 87.1% were female and 58.4% were registered nurses. The average age was 33 years. The prevalence of HCP with a high level of EE, DP and PA was 16.8%, 15.3% and 5%, respectively. The prevalence of WFC with a high level of WIF and FIW was 23.3% and 4.5%, respectively. The level of WIF and FIW were positively correlated with the level of EE and DP (r=0.42-0.57 with p-value<0.05).

Conclusion: This was the first study determining the relationship between BS and WFC among frontline HCP working in COVID-19 healthcare facilities. Since a high level of both BS and WFC were found among HCP, the increased access to mental health care should be adequately supported. Improving the burnout problem among HCP should not concern only an individual level but also their families.
