Abstract

Objective This paper focuses on liberal characteristics and liberalism in Islam which has been debated and discussed in Malaysia, particularly amid Malay Muslim kinship. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main thoughts of liberalism and to retort allegations raised by the Liberal group. This paper does not intend to show the theorists who consolidate with Liberalism in Malaysia.

Methodology The approach to this article is through document analysis by examining contemporary literatures, and critical analysis by responding to misconceptions procured by Liberalisme. As such, this article focuses farther on liberalism critques in Malaysia in terms of thinking, argumentation and ripostes related to issues broached by the Liberals in Malaysia.

Research Findings The findings of this article focuses more on the contentions made by the liberal faction and responses to these arguments. Among the impelling liberal petitions in Malaysia are regarding philosophy of freedom, Liberalism’s version of Syariah goals (maqasid syariah), hermeneutic interpretation of the Qur’an, relocating religion under democracy and secularism, and rejecting Islamic law.

Applications This article wholly ratifies the laws (fatwa) laid by the Indonesian Clerics Council (MUI) and Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) regarding liberals in Islam who digressed from religion. Therefore, the Liberal Islamic movement and Liberalism must be scrutinized and their arguments must be studied. Likewise, the response against Liberals critics needs Usul Fiqh’s approach, which upholds the Qur'an and Sunnah, and abiding by rational and scientific arguments.
