Wasatiyah in Islam and Living in Multicultural Society, Based on Belief and Concept

Abstract

This academic article aims at defining term “ Wasatiyah” in Islam and balancing between Islam in term of belief and concept of living in multicultural society. The study used data from the verses of Al-Qur’an and the prophetic tradition (Al-hadith) along with related documents namely books, journals in Thai, Malay and Arabic languages, presented in the form of content description. The study found that Islam approves the diversity of thoughts which must happened in any society and it is under the concept of divine destiny in Islam (Qadha/Qadar). The importance of freedom in accepting religions without enforcement, importance of preaching Islam to humankind and importance of giving prestige and value to the people.

Furthermore, it is also important to realise justice and equality being given to non-Muslims as well. For those who live in a multicultural society and implement such concept of Islam, of course peace will prevail become. In contrast, if they dismiss, conflict and dissension will take place and it accordingly destroys the image of Islam and Muslim.
